Redesignation of Sir Archie Te Atawhai Taiaroa
At a ceremony on 21 October 2009 at Hato Paora College, near Fielding, the Governor-General, Hon Sir Anand Satyanand, redesignated Sir Archie Te Atawhai Taiaroa as a Knight Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit. Sir Archie, of Taumarunui and a Hato Paora alumnus, was made a Distinguished Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit in 2003 but under recent changes to the New Zealand Royal Honours system, chose to be redesignated as a Knight Companion.

Redesignation of Dame Lois Muir
Dame Lois Muir was redesignated as a Dame Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit at ceremony hosted by the Govenor-General, Hon Sir Anand Satyanand, and Lady Satyanand, at the Dunedin Club on 8 September 2009. Duke of Edinburgh's Hillary Award
Governor-General, Hon Sir Anand Satyanand, as President of the Young New Zealander's Challenge announced that in honour of the late Sir Edmund Hillary, the awards would in future be known as the Duke of Edinburgh's Hillary Award. The new name was announced at a event at the Wellington Club on 20 August 2009.

Investiture of Sir John Walker
Sir John Walker was invested as a Knight Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit by Governor-General, Hon Sir Anand Satyanand, at a ceremony at Government House in Auckland on 15 August 2009. Sir John was knighted for services to athletics and the community. Since being made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 1992 for his services to athletics, Sir John Walker has continued to be involved with sport and the community, in particular youth. He has served as a Manukau City councillor since 1998. He has also been involved with the provision of community based projects for young people and their families. In 2008, he established the John Walker Find Your Field of Dreams Foundation to provide young people with the opportunity to engage in sport.

Knights and Dames ceremony
The Governor-General, Hon Sir Anand Satyanand, redesignated more than 60 New Zealanders as Dames or Knights of the New Zealand Order of Merit at a ceremony at Old St Paul's in Wellington on 14 August 2009. The ceremony followed changes insituted by the New Zealand Government to reinstate titular honours as part of the New Zealand Royal Honours system.

PDSA Gold Medal
On behalf of the PDSA, Britain's largest veterinary charity, Governor-General, Hon Anand Satyanand, travelled to the South Taranaki town of Manaia, and presented Alan Gay with the charity's Gold Medal, on 11 February 2009. The award was a posthumous award for Mr Gay's dog, Jack Russell Terrier, George, who in 2007, saved several children from being attacked by two pit bull terriers.

Government House Auckland
Government House Auckland is much smaller than Government House Wellington, having been originally built as a family home. Sir Frank and Lady Mappin bought the property in 1921 and spent the next 45 years, after building the residence, developing and landscaping the grounds. They gifted it to the Queen to be the Governor-General's official residence in Auckland in 1962.

Government House Vogel
With the closure of Government House Wellington for a three-year conservation project, when resident in the capital, the Governor-General, Hon Anand Satyanand and Mrs Susan Satyanand, will reside at Vogel House in Lower Hutt, which has been renamed Government House Vogel in the interim.
Vogel House was built as a wedding gift for Jocelyn Riddiford from her parents when she married James Vogel in 1932. In 1966 Mrs Vogel gifted the property to the government as a Prime Ministerial residence. The House has been the official residence of, among others, Prime Minister, the late Rt Hon Sir Robert Muldoon, and for a short time Prime Minister, the late Rt Hon David Lange. From 1999 to 2008, it was the home of the Hon Jim Anderton.

Government House Wellington
Government House in Wellington is a large, two-storey house, built mostly of wood, with attics, a grand staircase, a ballroom, dozens of other large and small rooms, very long corridors and a flag tower. It is the official residence of the Governor-General, but it also contains offices, and is used frequently for receptions of many kinds. This gallery contains photographs of the grounds and various rooms within the House.
