| At a ceremony hosted by the Governor-General, Hon Anand Satyanand, at Government House Auckland on 22 May, the Indian Government honoured the late Sir Edmund Hillary by posthumously awarding him one of its highest honours, the Padma Vibhushan. Because Sir Edmund died on 11 January 2008, just before the announcement of the award, it was presented to Lady Hillary by the Minister of Commerce & Industry for the Government of India, Mr Kamal Nath, who is visiting New Zealand. |

| | Sargeson Fellows celebrated at Government House 19 May 2008 |
| Award winning New Zealand writers, Brigid Lowry and Paula Morris, were formally celebrated as the 2008 Buddle Findlay Sargeson fellows at an event on Monday 19 May 2008 at Government House in Wellington. The event was hosted by the Governor-General, Hon Anand Satyanand and Mrs Susan Satyanand, and was attended by the Prime Minister, Rt Hon Helen Clark, friends and members of the Sargeson Trust, and Buddle Findlay partners and clients. Brigid Lowry took up residence in the Sargeson Centre, Auckland, in February and is nearing the end of her tenure, and Paula Morris begins hers in July. Both writers receive a $20,000 grant and will use the Buddle Findlay Sargeson Fellowship to focus full-time on their writing and to complete literary projects. | As a part of the first State Visit by a New Zealand Governor-General to Canada, the Hon Anand Satyanand and Mrs Susan Satyanand visited the War Amps National Headquarters on 1 May 2008. Founded by national charter in 1920 as The Amputations Association to assist veterans of the First World War who had lost limbs in the conflict, the War Amps has expanded its programmes to assist all Canadians who have had limbs amputated. Created in 1975, the CHild AMPutee (CHAMP) Programme is built on the Winner’s Circle philosophy that encourages child amputees (Champs) to accept their amputations and develop a positive approach to challenges. | Dr Jill Calveley, of Auckland, received the Queen’s Service Medal, for services to people with disabilities, at an Investiture Ceremony at Government House in Auckland on 16 April 2008. Dr Calveley was instrumental in establishing the Ambury Park Centre for Riding Therapy for people with disabilities in Auckland. She also implemented a research project to study the effects of riding on the sitting balance of people with disabilities and organized the Festival of the Horse in 1998 to raise funds for the Centre. |

Mrs Ngata was honoured for contribution to the Tairawhiti community for more than 50 years, including her work as a kuia, trustee and committee member of Te Rahui Marae and Karuwai Marae and long-standing member of St Mary’s Church in Tikitiki. Mrs Mackey was honoured for her involvement in Maori performing arts and Maori education for more than 50 years as a member and performer of the Ngati Poneke Maori Club and the Wellington Maori Cultural Society. |
