Government House has an extensive collection of art and artefacts. Government House also displays works by distinguished New Zealand artists on loan from the permanent collections of the Rutherford Art Trust and the Parliamentary Collection.

Entrance and Main Hall
The Entrance and Main Hall, with its lush, red carpets and impressive collections of paintings and artefacts, is one of the most admired parts of Government House.

House and Grounds
Government House Wellington was built between 1908 and 1910 and it covers approximately 42,000 m2. The grounds, which have been endorsed as a Garden of National Significance by the New Zealand Gardens Trust, cover about 12 hectares, some of which is flat lawn or garden, with much of the rest being steep hillside.

State Dining Room
The State Dining Room is used for formal dinners and 26 people can be seated at the long extending table, which dates from about 1880. The State Dining Room also contains the remarkable and very valuable portrait collection given to the House by Lord Norrie, at the end of his term as Governor-General, in 1957.

The Ballroom
The Ballroom is the largest room in Government House. It is used for receptions, concerts, balls, investitures and other award ceremonies, as well as for large formal dinners and lunches.

The Council Room
The Council Room is the place where, until the early 1970s, Ministers presented the Governor-General with regulations requiring his signature. It is now the Government House library and is where Rhodes Scholarship selection committee meetings are held.

The Drawing Room
The Drawing Room is an elegant L-shaped room is immediately to the north of the Ballroom and is used for formal receptions and ceremonies. Opening off it are the Conservatory and the Small Drawing Room.

Government House in Wellington is a large, two-storey house, built mostly of wood, with attics, a grand staircase, a ballroom, dozens of other large and small rooms, very long corridors and a flag tower. It is the official residence of the Governor-General, but it also contains offices, and is used frequently for receptions of many kinds. This gallery contains photographs of the grounds and various rooms within the House.
