Royal and Vice-Regal Patronage

The Governor-General is the Patron of many different charitable, cultural, sporting and social organisations. This follows the tradition of royal patronage established in the United Kingdom, although the practices of granting Royal Warrants and Royal Charters have not been continued here.

In New Zealand there are three forms of royal recognition: by the granting of the use of the title “Royal”; by a member of the royal family acting as patron or president; and by members of the royal family holding honorary military appointments in the New Zealand Defence Force.
